Rabbi Lazarev, the Chief Rabbi of Leningrad, who was arrested February 26, together with Rabbi Yasnogorowski by the Russian secret police on the charge that they had been maintaining illegal connections abroad, particularly with the Lubawitscher Rebbe (Rabbi Joseph Schneuersohn) was today sentenced to ten years exile in a concentration camp.
Rabbi Lazarev’s son was exiled for three years while the beadle, Zemach Zedek, was exiled for two years. The fourteen members of the Leningrad Jewish community, who had been arrested for disobeying the regulations laid down with regard to religious communities were also exiled to a concentration camp for various periods of years.
The home for the Jewish aged, that had been supported by the now liquidated Jewish community, is now closed for lack of funds. The Jewish old men and women, some of them more than eighty years old, are being distributed among various Christian homes while a few are being transferred to a former monastery ten miles from Pskov.
