Leon Arkin, president of the Workmen’s Circle, largest Jewish fraternal organization in the world, died here this morning at the age of 65.
Born in Lunno, Russia, Mr. Arkin came to this country as a boy of 16. He lived in Pittsburgh until 1926 and there became associated with the Workmen’s Circle. In 1926 he went to Boston to manage the Boston office of the Jewish Daily Forward. In the more than 20 years he lived in Boston, Mr. Arkin was active in Jewish communal, philanthropic and cultural activities.
In 1948 he came to New York to serve as the Forward’s advertising manager, a post he held until his death. He became ill several days ago at the end of a two-day annual meeting of the national executive committee of the Workmen’s Circle.
