Leon Bakst, the Russian Jewish painter died here at the age of 57.
Bakst, a scion of one of the well-known Russian Jewish families, became one of the most famous artists which Russia has given to the Western world. He was an international figure in the world of art and the theatre. He gained particular fame for his decorative work in the production of Maeterlink’s and D’Annunzio’s dramas. He was also very popular in America where an exhibition of his work was held in 1902.
Leon Bakst was born in Petrograd in 1869. In 1903 he married the daughter of Treitiakoff, the governor of Petrograd. He graduated from the Petrograd University and studied at the Art School in that city.
