Leon Berenson, famous Polish-Jewish lawyer, who served as first secretary in the Polish Legation in Washington and was later appointed Polish Charge d’affairs in Soviet Russia, died in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto, it was reported here today. He was 59 years old.
Berenson held a responsible position in the Polish Ministry of Justice in 1918 before he was transferred to the Foreign Ministry for diplomatic work. He was ousted from State service when the anti-Semitic Endek party came to power in Poland. He then returned to his private practice as a lawyer. In 1937 he successfully fought the barring of Jews from membership in the Polish Bar Association and during the famous Przytyk trial in Poland he was one of the defense counsel who represented the Jews.
