Composer-Conductor Leonard Bernstein’s new composition, The Chichester Psalms, was sung in Hebrew in the Chichester Cathedral yesterday.
The new work, which had been commissioned by the Dean of Chichester, received laudatory reviews in the press. The Telegraph called the work “brilliant in design and stimulating.” The Times reported that “in the prevailing atmosphere of ecumenical feeling, and in the light of certain current thinking on church music, it may not seem unduly strange to have, at an essentially Anglican festival, Psalm settings sung in Hebrew.”
