Lessing J. Rosenwald, eldest son of Julius Rosenwald, internationally known philanthropist and businessman, was elected vicechairman of the board of directors of Sears, Roebuck & Co., and also chairman of the executive committee today. Lessing Rosenwald is a resident of Philadelphia.
Lessing Rosenwald, who is 40 years old, worked his way up from the bottom. After his graduation from Cornell he joined Sears, Roebuck & Co. in a minor capacity. In 1920 he was appointed manager ofthe Philadelphia plant and three years ago was elected vice-president of the firm.
In addition to following in his distinguished father’s footsteps in the business world, Lessing Rosenwald has also carried on the Rosenwald tradition in philanthropy and civic work. He is now president of the Federation of Jewish Charities of Philadelphia. He played a leading role in Philadelphia’s drive against unemployment and made a personal gift of $100,000 to the unemployment fund.
