Many Israelis in various parts of the country were forced to eat cake over the weekend — or at least bread tasting almost like cake and costing as much — instead of the cheaper standard bread.
Bakers halted production of standard bread and instead produced fancy bread and sweet challot, claiming they could not afford to bake the standard loaves at the controlled prices ordered by the government. But many consumers complained that what they bought was “more or less standard bread, at fancy bread or cake prices.”
The Minsitry of Commerce and Industry is considering what steps to take to force the bakers to bake and sell standard loaves at controlled prices. The bakers are responding by saying that no government can force them to produce bread at a loss.
