Building on the Levant Fair ground is now proceeding at an enormously increased pace. The fair is today the largest single undertaking in Paiestine, employing at the present moment 500 workmen on the site in actual construction work. In addition there are carpenters, ironworkers and other artisans engaged on work outside, apart from tile-making factories and other industries. Over 1,000 workers are now employed by the fair.
Instruetions have been cabled by the Finnish Export Association to M. Skurnik, a leading Helsingfors business man who is at present in Palestine on behalf of the Association, to make arrangements with the Levant Fair authorities for a display of Finnish exports at the forthcoming fair. Mr. Skurnik was accompanied on his visit to the Fair ground by Mr. Gornitz, local representative of the Export Association and of a leading Finnish daily.
The news of Finland’s participation is of particular interest not only because it shows the interest roused in the Levant Fair in so distant a country as Finland, but because of the opportunities for reciprocal trade which will now be offered. Finland’s main exports are timber, paper, porcelain and butter, commodities in great demand in the developing countries of the East.
ORANGE IMPORTS
Of special interest to Palestine is the fact that an item on the Finnish import list is oranges, now supplied chicfly by Spain. There is reason to believe that Finland may offer a favorable outlet for the may offer a favorable outlet for the export of Jaffa oranges. An additional stimulus to reciprocal trade is the projected establishment of direct shipping lines between Palestine and Finland.
Among recent distinguished visitors at the fair has been Yves Lamontagne, Canadian. Trade Commissioner in Egypt. Mr. Lamontagne, who expressed great interest in the work being done,discussed plans for a Canadian representation at the fair. Another well known guest was Captain Robert Solomon, president of the Jewish National, Fund in England, who visited the Fair grounds recently with his wife.
The fair is proving to be one of Tel Aviv’s special tourist attractions and many of the leading tourist agencies are organizing parties to the grounds.
RUMANIA REPRESENTED
Final arrangements have now been made for Rumanian participation in the fair. A special pavilion is to be erected for the housing of Rumanian export commodities to be collected and displayed by the representatives of the Rumanian-Palestine Chamber of Commerce.
