Although convicted of criminal libel, the name of Jean Tissot, anti-Semitic and anti-Communist candidate for Ottawa East will appear on the ballots in next Monday’s federal elections here, it was revealed today.
Dominion election officials today said that Tissot’s conviction will not interfere with his name appearing on Monday’s ballot papers as he is eligible for election.
Tissot was yesterday found guilty by a jury in the Ontario Supreme Court on two charges of criminal libel against A. J. Freiman, president of the Zionist Organization of Canada and prominent Ottawa merchant.
Tissot libelled Freiman by delivering to William M. Graham and Herbert G. Munro, department store executives, a typewritten document purporting to be an English translation of an article appearing in Le Patriote’ Montreal anti-Semitic publication, and a cartoon from the same paper caricaturing Freiman.
A former detective with a record of 25 years on the Ottawa police force, Tissot was committed to jail yesterday. He will probably be sentenced at the end of the week.
During the trial Munro said that Tissot last Winter sought to enlist his help “to drive all Jews out of Ottawa” and to form an association of Christian merchants.
Graham said Tissot called on him last May and handed him two pamphlets which he read and considered “a disgrace.”
