Dr. Peretz Bernstein, a leading Parliamentary member of the Liberal Party, and former Minister of Commerce and Industry in two of Israel’s Cabinets, was nominated this weekend to the Presidency, as successor to the late Izhak Ben-Zvi. He will run opposite Schneur Zalman Shazar, previously nominated by the Mapai Party.
Voting on the election of the next President of Israel is scheduled to be held in the Knesset, by secret ballot, on May 21. The election of Mr. Shazar is believed certain on the first ballot. However, the nomination of Mr. Bernstein was filed as a protest against the alleged “monopoly” on high governmental posts held by the Mapai Party.
