The Liberal party named a special committee today which began contact with other parties for support for the nomination of Dr. Finchas Rosen, former Minister of Justice, for the Presidency of Israel. Zalman Shazar, a veteran Labor Zionist, has already been put forth by the Mapai to succeed the late Izhak Ben-Zvi.
The Religious party indicated it would discuss its position toward the two nominees next week. However, it appeared almost certain that Mr. Shazar would be able to obtain a majority of Israel’s Parliament for the post.
Mapam and Achdut Avodah reportedly favor Shazar’s candidacy while the religious parties might accept him because he is known to be a traditionalist and an ardent disciple of the Habad Chassidic movement.
