Julius L Meier, prominent merchant and civic worker, was nominated here for governor of Oregon on an independent ticket by a convention of liberals and independents attended by 4,000 people from all parts of the state. In accepting the nomination, Mr. Meier, who has never held public office, said he would not enter politics but if elected would run the state as a business.
Mr. Meier, a native of Portland, is president of the Meier Frank department store and a descendant, on both maternal and paternal sides, of Oregon pioneers. During the World War he was a leader in the Liberty Loan drives, being Northwest regional director. He was also connected with the Council of National Defense and active in the work for the rehabilitation of the devastated sections of France.
He is the president of the Columbia River Highway Association and one of the original promoters, with Samuel Hill, of the Columbia River Highway.
