Lieut-gov. Lehman Gives $10,000 to United Palestine Appeal

Lieutenant-Governor Herbert H. Lehman has contributed $10,000. an amount equal to his annual salary from the State, to the United Palestine Appeal, the American fund-raising agency for the rebuilding of Palestine, according to an announcement made by Mr. Morris Rothenberg. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Palestine Appeal, at the reception given last night at the Astor Hotel to the newly-elected officers of the United Palestine Appeal for Greater New York, of which Judge Otto A. Rosalsky is Chairman, and Nathan Straus, Honorary Chairman.

The reception marked the installation of Dr. Louis L. Harris, former Health Commissioner of New York City, and Judge Max S. Levine. as Assciate Chairmen for New York; Hon. Albert Ortinger, Chairman of the Executive Committee; Judge Mitchell May, Honorary Chairman for Brooklyn; Judge Grover M. Moscowitz and Judge Algernon L Nova. Associate Chairmen for Brooklyn.

In a message written for the occasion, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt praised the efforts of the Jewish people to rebuild Palestine and declared that the reconstruction of the Holy Land “Will satisfy the ideals and aspirations of millions of people.” Gov- (Continued on Page 4)

ermor Rececrelt’s message read as follows:

“I need not assure you formally, I am certain of my deep interest in your undertaking and my interest hope for its success. The rebuilding of Palestine must be a matter of deep concern to all people regardless of creed. Its development will satisfy the ideals and aspirations of (###) of people who look to it for spiritual and cultural inspiration.

“I know of the unending sacrifices monde by thousands of the men and women who in the face of great hardship and untiring effort have returned to Palestine in order to find there a home. These men and women who the many more thousands who desire to follow in their footsteps should be encouraged in their efforts to build their (###) in surroundings which will satisfy their economic and spiritual needs. I wish you and your associates a full measure of success in your undertaking.”

Making his contribution public in a letter to Mr. Rothenberg Col Lehman pointed out that he is doubling his contribution to the United Palestine Appeal of the year, when he gave $5,000. Lieut-Governor Lehman speaking of the drive for funds for recommendation work in Palestine, praised the Jewish Agency plum, whereby Zionists and non-Zionists are to be united for the rebuilding of Palestine saying.

“It is a source of great pleasure to me to know that under the proposed plan both Zionists and non-Zionists will work together for a common end I am lippy to have been parented to (###) in the conferences and meetings that have made such cooperation possible.

“I am of course greatly concerned and interested in all reconstructive and cultural work in Palestine. For many years price to the mandate. I realized the great part that Palestine played in the lives and thoughts of our co-(###) here and abroad During the past ten years. I have had an opportunity of closely observing and (###) in the reconstructive work which is being carried forward by (###) groups to develop Palestine as a homeland. The Palestine Economic Cooperation the Palestine Loan Bank the Bank for Co-operatives and (###) other agencies are all serving a good purpose in the building up of a sound economic like in Palestine. If Palestine however is to meet the economic and spiritual needs of those who are new living in other lands, much still has to be done. Means have to be found to permit its people to become economically self-supporting to follow the communal and spiritual life which they assize. Certainly the (###) and these who are willing to make the sacrifice of building up a new country should be (###) an (###) of working out their salvation along sound lines.
