Friedrich Bosshammer, a former Nazi SS officer who served in Adolf Eichmann’s “Jewish Department,” was sentenced Tuesday in West Berlin to life imprisonment for the murder of 3300 Italian Jews. In passing sentence, Judge Ulrich Fitzner said Bosshammer, now 65. “acted in complicity with Hitler, Himmler and Eichmann” in his coordination of the “Final Solution” in Italy, dispatching the 3300 Jews to Auschwitz during Feb.-June 1944. Bosshammer was convicted following testimony by more than 200 witnesses over a period of five months. The prosecutor called him an “excessive criminal” who went beyond even Eichmann’s orders and knew “beyond any doubt” the fate of the Jews. The defendant pleaded not guilty.
