Folowing formation at a secret meeting here of an Essex County branch of the German-American Protective Alliance, which is fostered, it is understood, by the United German Societies, Inc., preparations are already under way to make more effective the proposed counter-action against business houses which refuse to deal with German merchandise.
A picked list of German societies in the county was invited to the conference which was held in Montgomery Hall, said to be the official meeting place of the Nazis in this community. Ernest Geiger, of Washington avenue, this town, presided. It was disclosed that the callers of the conference were Geiger, Kurt Speck, Dr. Francis M. Just and Rev. Karl Krepper, of Newark, and Walter Jung, of Bloomfield. Twenty-five organizations were said to have been represented.
It was further disclosed that C. K. Froelich, acknowledged to be Spanknoebel’s successor as head of the United German Societies, addressed the session and outlined plans for creating a powerful German-American economic unit in the metropolitan area. Incidentally, this meeting was held exactly six months after a Nazi meeting in Newark, addressed by Spanknoebel, was broken up when a riot occurred.
