Rabbi Joseph Konvitz, president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, from his residence here announced that the rabbis are withdrawing from any active or even nominal affiliation with the affairs of the Union of Orthodox Congregations, particularly in the domain of “Hechsher” or sanctification over the kashruth of a food product.
Rabbi Konvitz declared that Rabbi M. S. Margolies and Rabbi Israel Rosenberg, two of the honorary heads of the Union of rabbis had challenged the authority of the Union of Congregations “to spread the number of ‘Hechsherim’ “by withdrawing as members of the board of directors of the latter body.
“We have no quarrel with the congregational body,” he stated in making the announcement, “but since we have not mingled actively in their affairs for the past several years, we do not want to assume even partial responsibility for any “Hechsher” which they issue, especially since their authority in so purely and traditionally a rabbinical function, is questionable.”
