A dramatic plea for tolerance and freedom of belief and opinion was voiced here last night by Monsignor John A. Ryan, well known Catholic leader of Washington, D. C., in an address before the summer meeting of the conference of Jews and Christians.
Monsignor Ryan, who is teaching a course in ethics at the University of Wisconsin this summer, declared for complete freedom for minorities. Commending the American Civil Liberties Union for its activities, he warned all minority groups, themselves subject to prejudice, against showing intolerance toward members of any other minority.
“Every minority must be allowed the full benefit of the protection of the law,” Monsignor Ryan declared, adding, “We cannot afford to refuse any citizen his right of a trial in due process of law. If the Communists are jailed without a trial this year, it may be the Catholics or the Jews or some other minority next year.”
