Israel’s declared intention of evacuating Egyptian territory has caused unrest among the residents of Gaza, with hostile elements inciting the other Arabs to oppose the Israeli regime.
However, life is becoming more normal in Gaza as shops open and people work in the fields and groves. There has been little response to the Israeli call for an exchange of Egyptian currency for Israeli, chiefly because many people believe the Egyptians will return. The schools remain closed because the teachers, most of whom were Egyptian, fled with the army.
Normalcy is also returning to El Arish, railway terminus where many of the inhabitants have been employed by Israeli authorities to work on the road. Three trains arrive and depart daily from El Arish, bringing UNRWA relief supplies. The refugees remain under UNRWA care.
