Likud suffered its first defeat in the Knesset yesterday since taking office last month. The issue was relatively minor but it indicated the fragile nature of Premier Menachem Begin’s narrow parliamentary majority.
Only 35 coalition MKs voted for Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon’s proposal to strike from the agenda a motion by Naftali Feder of the Labor Alignment’s Mapam partner to create a central authority to supervise the production and marketing of food derived from livestock. Thirty-six MKs voted for an alternative motion by Akiva Noff of the Democratic Movement for Change (DMC) to refer Feder’s motion to committee. The House committee will decide which committee will deal with it.
