Lindsay Greets Jews on Eve of Purim; Says Holiday Has Its Modern Counterpart

Mayor John V. Lindsay sent greetings to Jewish New Yorkers today on the occasion of the Purim festival which starts tonight. He called it “a meaningful holiday, rich in the tradition of Jewish folklore, and particularly relevant for the Jewish people today.” “In our own time,” the Major’s message said, “the Jewish people have triumphed over enemies committed to their destruction. So the ancient story of Purim has its modern counterpart.” He said it was “a parable for our day” carrying “the message that oppression and bigotry must be combatted with all the forces at our command, with reason, with intelligence, and, when necessary, with firm, lawful action.”
