Mayor John V. Lindsay greeted his Jewish constituency today on the eve of Shavuot, which begins tomorrow. Speaking of the Jewish people’s receiving of the Torah, which the holiday celebrates, the Mayor said: “From that hallowed event on Mount Sinai, through the ages, from the days of ancient Palestine, and up to our times and the rebirth of the State of Israel, the Torah has been at the very heart of the Jewish experience. Moses…stands as a towering figure not only in the life of the Jewish people but in the life of our civilization.”
