Lionel Reiss, painter and etcher, some of whose work has been reproduced in the pages of The Bulletin, is now deep in the task of building up the Artists’ Union, one of whose purposes will be to persuade the city government to turn over one of its unused buildings as a Municipal Art Center. To focus attention on the plight of New York artists, the Union is arranging for a march on City Hall, with a petition for the objects of the Union. Each of the parading painters will also carry an example of his work. The latter part of this month has been set tentatively as the date of the descent on City Hall. With an occupant in City Hall so hospitable to art as Mayor LaGuardia happens to be, there is more likelihood that the desires of the Union will find a ready hearing than if a Walker or an O’Brien were in power. At least LaGuardia knows his own mind. The Artists’ Union has already made its debut, as a cooperative unit, in the painting, signed Artists’ Union, which is one of the exhibits in the Independents’ Show.
