Demonstrating the dissatisfaction prevailing among the non-Jewish population in Lithuania at the confiscation of Jewish property there by the Gestapo, two leading Lithuanian officials have resigned from their posts as financial advisers to Heinrich Lohse, the Nazi Commissar for Lithuania, it is reported today in Dagens Nyheter published here.
The two Lithuanian officials, Professor Jlutis and M. Matlionis, who were in charge of the Lithuanian banking system, flatly informed the Nazi commissar that they considered the property of the Jews in Lithuania to be Lithuanian property which should not pass to Germany. They also protested against the Gestapo’s confiscation and embezzlement of Jewish funds.
Dissatisfaction with the Nazi occupation authorities in Lithuania is growing daily as a result of the fact that it has now become known that Berlin does not intend to reestablish the independence of the Baltic states, but on the contrary has decided to merge all Baltic countries into one Nazi-dominated territory which will be composed of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Minsk district and the Brest-Litovsk section of occupied Poland.
