London Boroughs with Large Jewish Populations Move to Curb Fascist Demonstrations

The councils of two North London boroughs with large Jewish populations today announced measures to stem the growth of anti-Semitic activity in their areas.

Under the chairmanship of its Mayor, Alderman C.R.Watts, the Stoke Newington council has called a public meeting for September to draw attention to “the very ## danger of the revival of fascist organizations,” and to take steps necessary to ##lt this movement. Councillor Pestell told the assembled council members: “We must ## the growth of fascist and near-fascist parties stalking the borough in many ##nd varied guises.”

In Hackney borough, Mayor J. S. Dalton informed the Council that Home Secretary James Chuter Ede had received a deputation from Hackney which reported on the anti-Jewish demonstrations which have been held in the area. Ede told the deputation that fascist activities were receiving his constant attention and that he was aware of the continuing and provocative actions. The Home Secretary has indicated that ##e does not favor specific legislation outlawing anti-Semitism.
