The London Daily Telegraph, leading Conservative organ and one of the most important newspapers in Britain, declared editorially today that “stability, fairness, and in the long run, the hope for a just peace in the Middle East all require that the arms balance be restored by the supply of essential weapons to Israel.”
Commenting on the resumption of the Four Power Mideast talks in New York today, the paper said it was difficult to see what point there was to starting the talks anew as long as the United States and the Soviet Union have failed to reach an agreement in their own bilateral discussions. “If America and Russian could agree on a viable and fair solution, and secure Arab acquiescence, Israel would not only have no real alternative other than to cooperate, but would be glad to,” the Daily Telegraph said.
