More than $700,000 will be raised here within four weeks for the purpose of planting a 750,000-tree “Weizmann Forest” in Israel, It was announced here today following a meeting last night at Grosvenor House at which a national committee of 400 members was set up. The meeting was presided over by Lord Herbert Samuel.
The campaign will be marked by a dinner on Nov. 22 at which General Jan Christian Smuts, former South African Premier and an intimate friend of Dr. Weizmann, will be the guest of honor. Gen. Smuts is coming to London from South Africa expressly for the purpose of addressing the meeting. The minimum amount which each guest will contribute will be the cost of planting at least 1,000 trees, or more than $1,000. This will probably be the highest amount ever paid for dinner tickets in England.
