Polish Interior Minister Gen. Mieczlaw Moczar, who heads the Secret Police, is leading a renewed purge of Polish Jews, reporter Neal Ascherson said today in the Sunday Observer. “Deep bewilderment and shock among veteran Communists of Jewish extraction are reported by visitors returning to East Berlin from Warsaw,” he said. “While many are still trying to put a brave face on things, others are on the edge of a nervous breakdown,” he reported.
Ascherson reported that one Communist whose parents were both gassed at Auschwitz and who was politically persecuted in the West, recently lost his job as a journalist. He refused the offer of a passport valid only for Israel.
