Most London newspapers, although deplorin the need for the martial law in Palestine authorized yesterday by the Cabinet, expressed approval today of the Order in Council, emphasizing the primary necessity of restoring peace.
Morning papers stated in editorials that drastic measures had been necessary and the Palestine Arabs strained Britain’s patience to the breaking point.
The Daily Telegraph emphasized that after order is restored, there will be the fullest opportunity for negotiation of Arab grievances.
For the present, everything is subordinate to restoring order, declared the Morning Post, which also said it was necessary to limit the size of the Jewish national home.
The Daily Mail pointed out that under the powers to be delegated to Gen. Dill, he will have greater authority than customary martial law accords.
The Daily Express, a Lord Beaverbrook paper, described the Order in Council as establishing a dictatorship over Palestine. “Heil Dilli” it declared in an editorial. “This is government by bayonet with a vengeance.”
