Various problems in connection with the defense of Jewish rights before the United Nations were discussed at the annual meeting of the Consultative Council of Jewish Organizations which took place here over the week-end. The Council includes the American Jewish Committee, the Anglo-Jewish Association and the Alliance Israelite Universelle.
One of the main subjects discussed was the methods of enforcing the human rights declaration adopted by the United Nations. The Council agreed that the aim should be to secure the rights of individuals and groups to bring grievances regarding the infringements of the declaration before the United Nations. Other questions discussed at the meeting included: the right of asylum for persons persecuted on racial or religious grounds; the proper methods for preventing discrimination against racial minorities and means of protecting groups against defamation. The Council decided to study all problems in greater detail and make recommendations to the U.N. Economic and Social Council.
The American Jewish Committee was represented by Irving Engel, chairman of its executive committee, Simon Segal, director of its foreign affairs department, and Zachariah Shuster, acting director of its Paris office. The Association was represented by Leonard Stein, president; Neville Laski, and the Hon. Ewen Montague. Spokesmen for the Alliance were Prof. Rene Cassin, president, and also vice-chairman of the U.N. Human Rights Commission, Jules Braunschvig and Eugene Weill.
