London bobbies were today under orders to arrest any person indulging in anti-Jewish talk.
The orders, issued by the Commissioner of Police, followed yesterday’s speech in the House of Commons by Sir John Simon, Home Secretary, in which he asserted that the police would take energetic measures to put down Fascist intimidation of Jewish shopkeepers in London’s East End.
The fact that the orders had been issued was disclosed in the Old Street police court during hearing of a case against the propaganda officer of the British Union of Fascists, who was arrested for attacking Jews at a meeting in the Northeast section of London.
Prosecuting the case, the police attorney stated that “the police commissioner takes a serious view of this matter. It can’t be too widely known that talk of this sort will not be tolerated.”
