The Times warned editorially today against “wholesale internment” of refugees in connection with the current “fifth column” scare. “The accident of races,” the editorial declared, “should not be made grounds for stricter watch over refugees while neglecting Fascist, Communist and other peace-at-any-price agitators.”
Advising “ceaseless vigilance but not wholesale internment,” The Times pointed out that most of the aliens in England were “refugees from Nazi persecution” and hence the allegation that the spy scare was based on their presence was “certainly without any substantial foundation.”
