In connection with the efforts of the British Labor Defense Council to obtain a modification of the various restrictions imposed upon aliens in England, Home Secretary Henderson stated in the House of Commons that there were 270,986 aliens in England over the age of sixteen, most of whom, however, were residents of long standing. This figure is but one percent of the total population of England.
There is considerable dissatisfaction in England with the rather severe restrictive measures on aliens, requiring them to register, making naturalization very difficult and subjecting them to deportation on numerous grounds. The deportation situation has been made even more acute by the decision of the English courts that they had no power to review deportation proceedings which were purely within the province of the Government.
