Sen. Russell Long (D.La.) agreed today to co-sponsor the Jackson Amendment to the U.S. Soviet trade pact, bringing to 77 the number of Senators opposed to most favored nation treatment for the Soviet Union as long as it restricts its citizens right to emigrate. Long, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was not among the original co-sponsors of the measure when it was first introduced last Oct.
His adherence to it now is regarded as significant in its timing and importance to the legislative process of the Jackson Amendment. With Long behind it, the legislation appears virtually assured of passage by the Finance Committee to the Senate floor for consideration by the full Senate. Jackson said he was “extremely pleased” by Long’s action.
Charges of complicity in the murder of an undetermined number of Jews have been brought against former Gestapo chief Himmler’s legal advisor, SS-Oberfuehrer Horst Bender, 68, who now practices law in Stuttgart, it was reported today in Bonn. His real identity was recently discovered by the Nazi war crimes center in Ludwigsburg. According to SS files. Bender was a senior SS judge in 1942 when he proposed in writing to Himmler that the murder of Jews for political reasons should not be a punishable offense, Himmler accepted the proposal.
