The Community Synagogue of Port Washington, Long Island, has charged the village authorities of suburban Sands Point, L, L, with attempting to abridge freedom of religion, in a new court action aimed at forcing the Sands Point authorities to rescind zoning regulations which have prevented the congregation from using an estate it acquired in the village as a house of worship.
The synagogue charged in an action filed yesterday in the State Supreme Court that the zoning regulations were “calculated to abridge the freedom of worship and religion.” The village authorities, acting a week after the synagogue acquired the estate in Sands Point, adopted zoning regulations for houses of worship which the estate could not meet. The synagogue charged the regulations were specifically aimed at it.
