Lort Bearsted, (Walter Horace Samuel), vice-president of the Angle-Jewish Association and a leading Jewish philanthropist in Great Britain, died here today at the age of 66.
When the Nazis seized power in Germany in 1933, he took an active role in the formation in London of the Council for German Jewry and later in the Central British Fund for Relief and Rehabilitation. He also participated in the 1939 Conference on Palestine, held at St. James Palace. He served as a captain in World War I and as a colonel during World War II. He had been a trustee of the Tato Gallery and a trustee and chairman of the National Gallery.
