The House of Commons has invoked the Parliament Act for the first time in 42 years, to overrule the latest attempt by the House of Lords to block legislation that would allow British courts to try suspects of Nazi war crimes living in Britain.
The Parliament Act has not been used since 1949. It became necessary after the peers voted April 30, for the second time in less than a year, to reject the war crimes bill, which the House of Commons had passed overwhelmingly March 20.
The bill has been sent to the queen for royal assent, which is expected Thursday.
