The Jewish Federation-Council here, at a meeting of its board of directors, adopted a resolution condemning a statement issued recently by representatives of the government of Egypt, Syria and Iraq calling for “the establishment of a military unity” for the purpose of “liberating Palestine.”
“We, of the Jewish community, are confident that the officials of our government in the executive and legislative branches fully understand as clearly as we do that this is an open declaration of the United Arab Republic’s intention to destroy the State of Israel,” the resolution stated. “This is a violation of the United Nations Charter. It is a threat against the territorial integrity of a country with which the United States maintains friendly relations. It places into Jeopardy the only country in the Middle East which maintains a democratic form of government.
“Through Israel’s very existence it sets an example for the surrounding countries and the newly born countries in Africa of the fact that the democracy is the best and most desirable form of government,” the resolution continued. “A war of aggression by the United Arab Republic would bring not only untold suffering and the possible risk of a worldwide conflagration, but it would also play directly into the hands of the Soviet Union. We believe that forthright American action to preserve the peace in the Middle East is in the interest of the United States.”
