A group of Los Angeles Jews who migrated to Bira Bidjan in June with a view to permanent settlement there are either returning to the United States, disappointed, or coming to Moscow with the hope of settling in Moscow, the “Emess” reports.
The paper mentions the Jewish families named Filtzman, Heller, Konsev and Bomart, among those who are deserting Bira Bidjan. The first two are already enroute to the United States.
In this connection, the ” Emess” severely criticizes the American organization ” Icor” for sending as prospective settlers “traders and speculators who not only are unfit for Bira Bidjan, but spread counter-revolutionary sentiments there.”
The paper quotes Mr. Filtzman as stating prior to his departure: “I would rather stand in line for Hoover’s charity soup than enjoy the so called Soviet fortunes.”
Twenty seven American Jews, including three women and six children who landed in Leningrad on their way to Bira Bidjan were not cared for by the Leningrad Ozet with the results that for three days they remained with out food or shelter, the “Emess” also reports.
Punishment for the Leningrad Ozet is demanded by the Jewish Communist daily.
