A call for repeal of the McCarran-Walter Immigration and Naturalization Act and the substitution of a complete ban on immigration into the United States was published here in the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest and most powerful papers on the West Coast.
The immigration ban was advocated by Eugene Nixon, editorial page columnist of the paper, who said he favored “repealing the present immigration law and substituting for it an act forbidding any further immigration whatever into this country for the next five or ten years.” He added that as a law, the McCarran-Walter legislation “will do until we get something more restrictive.”
Nixon denounced critics of the law as seeking “unrestricted immigration, particularly of the kind of foreigners who seem related to them by racial ties or, in the case of the Reds and Pinkos, a nondescript horde of foreigners who will help to louse up our domestic situation.” He described advocates of changes in the law as “Reds, Pinkos and self-appointed leaders of racial groups.”
