A funeral service will be held tomorrow in Temple Emanu-El for Louis Broido who died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital at the age of 79. He was born in Pittsburgh, one of eight children of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. He won a four-year scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh and then went to the law school, graduating in 1917.
Active in Jewish communal affairs, Mr. Broido was a member of the Joint Distribution Committee for more than 35 years and served as its chairman from 1965-1971. He was also a former president of the United Jewish Appeal, a member of the board of Temple Emanu-El, vice-chairman of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Mr. Broido was for many years executive vice-president of Gimbel Brothers Inc., and was Commissioner of Commerce and Industrial Development under Mayors Robert F. Wagner and John V. Lindsay. As Commissioner, Mr. Broido promoted the establishment of industrial parks and strove to stem the flight of industry from the city.
