Louis LeMed prizes of $500 each for the best literary works in Yiddish and Hebrew that appeared in 1949 were awarded here last night to five writers. Rachel Korn was honored for a book of Yiddish poems and Eliahu Lipiner, of Brazil, received an award for an historical work in Yiddish.
Aaron Zeitlin was honored for his poetic works in Hebrew while Hillel Bavli won an award for translating Shakespeare’s “Anthony and Cleopatra” into modern Hebrew. S.Z. Setzer received an award for his contributions to Yiddish and Hebrew literature. Several hundred persons attended the presentation ceremonies, which were held at the New School for Social Research, under the chairmanship of Samuel Niger, prominent Jewish critic.
