Louis Segal, Labor Zionist Leader, Dead; Was Jewish Agency Member

Louis Segal, general secretary of the Far band-Labor Zionist Order since 1926, and a veteran labor leader, died here today after a lengthy illness. He would have been 70 next July 4. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue. Interment will be in the Farband section of Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, N.J.

At his death, he was a member of the executive of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel, and he served as an officer or member of the highest governing bodies of the World Jewish Congress, the Jewish Claims Conference, the National Committee for Labor Israel, the Jewish National Fund, the American Association for Jewish Education, the Jewish Education Committee of New York, the American Finance and Development Corporation for Israel (AMPAL), the Labor Zionist Organization of America, the World Congress for Jewish Culture, and many others. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Mr. Gegal was a frequent contributor of articles to the Yiddish and Anglo-Jewish press. A volume of some of his writings in Yiddish was published in 1951 on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as general secretary of Farband. Renowned as an orator, Mr. Segal annually appeared in scores of communities in the United States and Canada, in Israel, as well as in Europe and Latin American countries. Born in Poland, he came to the United States in 1911.

JEWISH AGENCY MOURNS HIS DEATH; CITES HIS ROLE IN JEWISH LIFE

A statement mourning his death was issued on behalf of the Jewish Agency by Mrs. Rose Halprin, chairman of its American section.”The tragic death of Louis Segal leaves a great void in Jewish life and in the Zionist movement,” the statement said “Throughout his career, he gave of himself unstintingly to the Zionist movement and to every constructive endeavor in Jewish life. His services to the Jewish people were that of a dedicated, militant Zionist leader who led and inspired the Jewish working masses affiliated with the Labor Zionist movement to work unceasingly in behalf of Israel and the Jewish people generally.

“His specific role in building the Farband-Labor Zionist Order to its present place of eminence in Jewish life constitutes a distinguished chapter in American Jewish history. We shall sorely miss his counsel, his dedication and his enthusiasm. In the name of the executive of the Jewish Agency, and the World Zionist Organization, we express our deepest condolences a to his family, to the Labor Zionist movement and to the Jewish People who have suffered an irreparable loss .” the statement concluded.
