Despite Jewish protests, the Louisiana Senate passed a bill requiring all primary elections in the state to be held on Saturday, The bill was passed in the closing hours of the 1958 session of the Louisiana legislature.
The Senate had earlier rejected this measure, but under pressure from the administration and despite strong opposition by a group of Senators led by Senator Robert Ains-worth of New Orleans the bill was passed. Under this law all primary elections in Louisiana; including elections for city and parish officials, will be held on Saturday.
