Acting Secretary of State Robert A. Lovett today declined to comment on a question raised by a British correspondent at the Secretary’s press conference about the reported invasion of Egypt by Israeli forces.
The question was asked in connection with a statement made today at the Security Council meeting in Paris by British delegate Harold Beeley that Israeli troops allegedly invaded Egypt. Beeley told the Council that according to telegrams from the British Embassy in Cairo, Jewish forces were on Egyptian territory.
Asked to comment on the report, Secretary Lovett said he could not say anything on this question, nor on any phase of the Palestine situation, since the matter was now in the hands of the U.N. Security Council. When another correspondent posed the question whether his silence gave implicit consent “to the form of the question,” the Acting Secretary replied that it did not.
