President Truman today announced the appointment of Loy Henderson as Ambassador to India and Minister to Nepal.
Henderson, present chief of the State Department’s Division of Near Eastern and African Affairs, has long been under attack by Zionist circles and American liberals for his reportedly pro-Arab, obstructionist views with regard to American policy toward Palestine and the new state of Israel. Secretary of State George C. Marshall told a press conference later in the day however, that Henderson’s appointment to the India post had no significance with regard to this country’s policy on Palestine. Secretary Marshall said the matter of giving Henderson a ministerial post had been under consideration for quite some time. He could not say who would be appointed to fill the post vacated by Henderson.
