Followers of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, ultra-Orthodox Hassidim, marked the 169th anniversary today of the liberation of their founder, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, from a Czarist prison where he was incarcerated in 1798 on false charges of disloyalty to the Russian Crown. The liberation of the religious leader, after 53 days of confinement, is considered by his followers to be of symbolic and historical significance, and is celebrated by them each year on the 19th day of the Hebrew calendar month, Kislev.
On a contemporary note, the Lubavitcher center here announced a weekend of seminars for college and university students on the theme of “Chabad’s answer to self alienation,” beginning tomorrow and running through Monday. The program, sponsored by Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, the educational arm of the Lubavitcher movement, will feature an address by Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who leads the movement.
