A protest meeting asking for relief from the burden of heavy taxation was held last night in the Great Synagogue here. About two hundred merchant participated in the meeting at the close of which the merchants started a street demonstration, marching toward the Revenue Office.
The merchants urged the authorities either to reduce the taxes or to arrange for easier conditions of payment. The police dispersed the demonstrants.
Henry A. Cohen of Albany was elected president of the New York State Federation of Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew and Kindred Associations at the annual convention of the Federation held in Utica.
Other officers are: Treasurer, Arthur D. Mann, Schenectady; secretary. Mary Scherline, Utica; director of women’s work, Mrs. Rose E. Alderman, Syracuse: director of junior work. Bessie Passamaneck, Rochester; athletic director, Samuel Harris, Binghamton.
The Bernard B. Given Oratorical Contest was won by Seymour Ellenbogen. of Albany, whose subject was “A Plea for Jewish Pride.”
