Ludwig Lewisohn Calls for New Religious Humanism at Annual Hillel Summer Institute

Ludwig Lewisohn, eminent American and Jewish literary figure, this week-end called on the B’nal B’rith Hillel Foundations in this country to help build a new religious humanism. Dr. Lewisohn, who is now teaching at Brandeis University, spoke to the annual national Hillel summer institute at Camp High Point here.

Dr. Lewisohn stated that because of the new recognition that “scientific determinism is no longer adequate for our intellectual situation,” the ground is “once more clear for faith and for the transcendent sanctions of morals and the Jewish religion,” he declared. This task, he said, will be difficult because “our students come’ to us from that American educational system which is in a state of crisis on account of the stupid materialism and neglect of moral and religious values that prevail.”
