High Commissioner MacMichael today promised Government aid for Palestine’s stricken citrus industry to a joint delegation of Arab and Jewish growers.
The High Commissioner said he would submit to the Treasury detailed plans for loans to citrus growers and a moratorium on debts, would seek means to increase the number of vessels available for exporting citrus and would consult the Colonial Office on the advisability of sending an Arab-Jewish delegation to London.
The delegation, headed by Zvi Butkovsky, asked a Government loan of L5 per cultivated dunam and the lifting of the United Kingdom’s duty on Palestinian citrus. The delegation was named at a recent joint meeting of Arab and Jewish citrus growers at Petach Tikvah.
Meanwhile, a scheduled plenary meeting of the Jewish National Council was postponed because of President Pinchas Rutenberg’s last-minute negotiations to induce the Jewish Farmers’ Association and the Zionist-Revisionists to accept a settlement of labor problems.
