“There is much in the government statement which is unacceptable, but I cannot on that account join the hysteria or general hopelessness that it has occasioned,” said Judah Magnes, Chancellor of the Hebrew University, in a statement issued to the press today.
Dr. Magnes has been incensed at reports “published by lying journalists” attributing statements of absolute sympathy with the White Paper policy to him. Yesterday, through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, he denied having made a public expression on the White Paper.
“I have made no statement for or against the government’s attitude and do not intend to until the basic documents are available,” he said today. “The Simpson report is not yet available to the public here, and the government constructive policy has not yet been announced.”
Dr. Magnes, offering his own views, said, “It is necessary to calmly and vigorously seek a way of living together. The basis of this, today as always, in my opinion is an understanding of the Arabs.”
